How Does OSHA Decide Who to Inspect?

With just over 2000 inspectors throughout the United States, OSHA is unable to frequently inspect all of the 7 million workplaces that it covers. As such, OSHA focuses its inspection efforts on the most hazardous workplaces as is determined through the following order of priority:

  1. Imminent danger situations that could cause death or serious physical harm.
  2. Fatalities and catastrophes that involve the hospitalization of three or more employees.
  3. Complaints or allegations of hazards or violations such as anonymous employee complaints.
  4. Referrals of hazard information from other federal, state or local agencies, individuals, organizations or the media.
  5. Follow-up Inspections to verify abatement of violations cited during previous inspections.
  6. Planned or programmed inspections aimed at specific high-hazard industries or individual workplaces that have experienced high rates of injuries and illnesses or previous citations. A number of random inspections are also completed under this category.

Call us or come to our October 13 Seminar to learn about surviving an inspection, how to keep you workplace off the programmed inspection list, and what industries OSHA currently consider to have the highest risks to employees. You can also check out OSHA's Inspection Fact Sheet.

Does my Company Need a DOT Registration Number?

You must register with the Department of Transportation (DOT) if you offer for transportation a shipment containing any of the following categories of hazardous materials (including hazardous wastes):

  1. A highway route controlled quantity of a Class 7 (radioactive) material.
  2. More than 55 pounds of a Division 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 explosive material.
  3. More than one liter per package of a “material poisonous by inhalation” that meets the criteria for “hazard zone A”.
  4. A hazardous material (including hazardous wastes) in a bulk packaging having a capacity equal to or greater than 3,500 gallons for liquids or gases or more than 468 cubic feet for solids.
  5. A shipment in other than a bulk packaging of 5,000 pounds or more of one class of hazardous materials (including hazardous wastes) for which placarding is required for that class.
  6. A quantity of hazardous material that requires placarding.

You can register via DOT’s registration website or give us a call and we can help determine whether registration is required.
