ISO 9001:2000 is a quality management system requirements standard, designed to be applicable to all organizations, regardless of the product category and type or size of business. Since inception of the original set of ISO 9000 standards in 1987, ISO 9000 standards have become globally recognized as the basis for establishing quality management systems. By the end of 2003, it is estimated that 500,125 businesses had achieved ISO 9001:2000 certification; 30, 294 of these businesses were located within the United States.

The most recent change in the set of standards, adopted on December 15, 2000, replaced ISO 9001:1994, ISO 9002:1994 and ISO 9003:1994 with a single standard, ISO 9001:2000. Registered companies were given until December 15, 2003 to transition their existing quality management systems to the new standard. After that date, their accreditation was lost.
